During the Gold Rush, pans were used for placer mining, a simple method to separate heavy gold from lighter sand and gravel by swirling water in the pan, causing gold to settle at the bottom due to its higher density, then washing lighter material out over the rim. Prospectors would scoop gravel, add water, shake and agitate it to break up clumps and let gold sink, then gently wash away dirt, leaving behind "pay dirt" with gold flakes, often using riffles (ridges) in the pan for better collection. 

Pickaxes and The Gold Rush (History Recap)

During the 19th-century gold rushes, particularly the 1849 California Gold Rush, the pickaxe was one of a miner's three most essential manual tools, alongside the shovel and gold pan. It was used to break apart hard physical surfaces that other tools could not penetrate. 

Miners used pickaxes to fracture bedrock and break up packed alluvial deposits (sand, gravel, and clay) in riverbeds where gold was often trapped. As surface gold in streams was exhausted, miners moved to hard-rock mining. They used pickaxes to dig vertical shafts up to 40 feet deep and horizontal tunnels into quartz veins to extract gold-bearing ore. For narrow veins of ore, the pickaxe allowed miners to selectively dislodge rock from the face of a mine with more accuracy than larger tools.

Shovels were indispensable tools for 19th-century gold prospectors, serving as the primary instrument for extracting gold-bearing earth. While the pickaxe fractured hard surfaces, the shovel was essential for digging, loading, and moving materials like loose dirt and gravel. 

Shovels were used to dig vertical shafts and horizontal tunnels. Miners used them to gather initial samples from riverbeds and hillsides to survey a site's gold potential. Prospectors shoveled hundreds of pounds of riverbed gravel and sand into devices like sluice boxes and "long toms" to wash away soil and trap gold. Shovels were used to clear away top layers of soil to reach the gold-rich material located directly above the bedrock. 

These fundamental techniques allowed many prospectors, known as "49ers," to search for gold with just a pan, pick, and shovel, making it accessible to nearly anyone.
