Pans and The Gold Rush (History Recap)
During the Gold Rush, pans were used for placer mining, a simple method to separate heavy gold from lighter sand and gravel by swirling water in the pan, causing gold to settle at the bottom due to its higher density, then washing lighter material out over the rim. Prospectors would scoop gravel, add water, shake and agitate it to break up clumps and let gold sink, then gently wash away dirt, leaving behind "pay dirt" with gold flakes, often using riffles (ridges) in the pan for better collection.
This fundamental technique allowed many prospectors, known as "49ers," to search for gold with just a pan, pick, and shovel, making it accessible to nearly anyone
